“There is no happiness like taking a set of keys and knowing that the place is yours and you can paint the front door any colour you like. As it happens I am not allowed to paint my own front door, it has to be black.”

Last week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson placed homeownership as a central part of the government’s levelling up agenda. He described how the government is embarking on a £640bn programme to “Build Back Better” with plans to fix the housing market by increasing the number of new homes built and improving the infrastructure behind our working lives.

The part of Mr Johnson’s speech dedicated to our industry was short on detail but he outlined how planning will put “beautiful homes on brownfield sites in places where homes make sense”, insisting that fewer homes will be constructed on Greenfield sites to protect the environment.

In addition to this, there are also plans for his government to carry out programmes of tree-planting and re-wilding as a part of their “levelling up” agenda, perhaps to prevent more construction on Greenfield sites.

Is now the right time to move?

Plans to boost home ownership in full swing…

Statistically speaking, the peak time for UK movers to make their move is the Summer months, particularly August. This is mainly to settle in before the kids go back to school and ease pressure whilst others are on holiday. However, moving in the Autumn can have its pros. For instance, settling in before the festive period begins, and you’ll have your selection of move-in dates due to the lower demand. Also, it’s common for those who have listed their properties in the Summer to lower their price standards as Winter approaches. This is because the peak time has ended and sellers are more desperate to sell their homes at this point.
